Getting started

  1. 1

    Connect

Open Whisper on the computer and on the devices that will play, and connect them.

  2. 2

    Choose devices

In the computer’s device tools, choose audio sharing, select one or more playback devices, and set each one’s channel.

  3. 3

    Play

Sound from the computer now plays on all of them. Adjust or stop at any time.

More than one speaker.

  • Everything the computer plays

It shares the system’s output, so music, video, and calls all come through without setting up each app.

  • Several devices at once

When devices play together, Whisper estimates the clock offset between them to keep them aligned, and shows how well they are in sync.

  • Left and right channels

Set each device to stereo, left, right, or mono. Two phones can become a makeshift stereo pair.

  • A phone as a speaker

An Android phone can be a playback device, bringing the computer’s sound to wherever you are.

  • Volume per device

Each playback device has its own gain for shared audio. It only affects that device, not the computer’s volume.

  • Local network only

Audio travels directly between devices on your network, never through a server.

Platforms and requirements

  • macOSShares and plays

Sharing this Mac’s audio needs macOS 13 or later and the Screen Recording permission in System Settings.

  • WindowsShares and plays

Captures whatever the system is playing.

  • LinuxShares and plays

    Needs PulseAudio or PipeWire Pulse.

  • AndroidPlays only

Cannot share the phone’s own audio, but can play audio shared from a computer.

Questions

Why does the Mac ask for Screen Recording?

macOS puts capturing system audio under the Screen Recording permission. When sharing audio, Whisper takes only the sound and does not record what is on screen.

Is there a delay? Can I watch video with it?

Audio goes through the network and a buffer, so it plays a little later than on the computer itself, depending on your Wi-Fi. Music and podcasts are fine; where sound must match the picture, as in video or games, you may notice it lagging.

Can I share my phone’s audio to the computer?

Not at the moment. Android only plays; sharing starts from a computer.
